Mandel, Georges
(1885-1944)
   political figure
Born in chatou, Georges Mandel was an aide in the cabinet of georges Clemenceau (1908), and became his main collaborator when the latter was prime minister (1917). Politically moderate as a deputy (1919-24; 1928-40), and serving several times as a minister, Mandel opposed with great vigor the armistice of June 1940. in the hope of being followed by political elements capable of forming a government able to pursue the war overseas, he went to North Africa, but was sent back to France and interned by the vichy government. Taken by the Nazis, he was shot by the Milice in the forest of Fontainebleau.
